The 'Caring Mother' In Hon. Benedicta Ebuehi

Hon. (Mrs) Benedicta Ebuehi, Executive Chairman of Etsako East local government area visits patients at the General Hospital, Agenebode

It was a hectic day at the office for the energetic Hon. (Mrs) Benedicta Ebuehi, the Executive Chairman of Etsako East local government area, as she emerged from her office at the twilight hours of the day to head home. So I thought.

Her two-car convoy actually headed towards home direction, but made a detour shortly after a couple of metres away from office environment, and went to the general hospital, Agenebode to see a patient on admission - the Woman Leader of Ward 1, Agenebode, Mrs Regina Aguda.

If you think the impromptu visit was for Mrs Aguda alone, you are certainly off the mark. The amiable Chairman stopped by the bedside of a little girl of about five years old with severe burns on the left side of her stomach.

The probing questions by the local government helmsman revealed the girl got burnt while the mother was away from home.

The Chairman was not happy with the apparent carelessness of the girl's mother who was not in the hospital at the time of the Chairman's visit.

The Executive Chairman moved from one bedside to another and to another greeting the sick and their relations there with them.

A woman newly delivered of baby to whom the Chairman joked, "this one is good news," as she congratulated the nursing mother on her safe delivery.

She met twin girls who were said to be stooling; asked the doctor the conditions of the two girls who were probably less than a year old.

From there to another bedside and so on and so on, educating one particular nursing mother whose child was also stool, on how to prepare yellow pap (akamu) as a better alternative to the custard the woman claimed she was feeding her baby with.

"It is something you can do by youself," the caring Chairman told the woman. "I also prepared it for my child when I was a nursing mother."

The Chairman's empathy and love for all the patients she met at the hospital ward was glaring and overwhelming, as she paid the bills of the twin girls as well as giving out cash gifts to most of the patients, as "thank you, ma, thank you, ma" reverberated in the hospital, as the caring motherliness of the Executive Chairman charmed everyone present.
