Hon. (Mrs) Benedicta Ebuehi has enjoined the people of Etsako East local government area to guide jealously their general freedom and remain united in order to hasten development.

The Executive Chairman stated this in her message to the people to mark the 60th anniversary of Nigeria's Independence from the British colonialists on October 1, 1960.

"Freedom is sweet, which is what independence is all about; and nations had gone to wars over it but thankfully, we got our Independence not through the barrel of the gun but on a negotiation table," Hon. (Mrs) Benedicta Ebuehi stated in her message titled 'Freedom Is A Catalyst For Development'.

"We must therefore, salute the courage and mental capacity of our heroes and heroines during the colonial era whose intelligentsia won us the independence we celebrate today without spilling blood.

"The import of independence of whatever nature couldn't be more appreciated elsewhere than in Edo state where the people in less than a fortnight ago threw off the shackles of political backwardness to freely vote our lovable governor, His Excellency, Godwin Obaseki and his loyal deputy, Rt. Hon. Philip Shaibu for a second term in office."

The amiable Executive Chairman used the independence message to thank the people of Etsako East in particular and Edo state in general for their heartwarming pronouncement through the ballot box that they have come of age to decide their political future freely without irritating interference from within and outside the state.

Hear her: "This occasion of Nigeria's 60th independence anniversary is very apt to thank the people of Etsako East local government area in particular and Edo state in general for gallantly calling the bluff of political terrorists who tried desperately to undermine the Edo governorship election.

"I think the Edo people deserve the Nobel Peace Prize for the peaceful manner they conducted themselves during the Edo governorship election, which makes the election one to remember with nostalgia for a very long time to come.

Hon. (Mrs) Benedicta Ebuehi said the Independence celebration would have been more elaborate but for the continuous serious threat of coronavirus pandemic.

"We would have celebrated the independence more elaborately but for the deadly coronavirus pandemic which is still a very serious threat to all of us," she said.

"Not to worry, my good people of Etsako East.
As our Wake and See Governor transits from ending his first tenure to starting his second term of office, I assure you that the development packages he has in stock for us will more than compensate for the COVID-19-induced subdued independence celebration.

"Please, continue to observe all the preventive measures put in place by both the state and federal governments to contain the coronavirus pandemic.

Happy independence celebration to you all."
