The Executive Chairman of Etsako East local government area, Hon. (Mrs) Benedicta Ebuehi has said that "Children are our world," adding that "We must live for them in order to make them better future leaders than we are."
In her message to mark this year's Children's Day, Hon. (Mrs) Benedicta Ebuehi said we as parents should and must see the duty of upbringing of our children as full time and second to none, even as she acknowledged that parents must work to be able to fulfill their obligations to their children.
"It may sound rhetorical to say that bringing up children is a full time duty for parents, even when these parents have to go out almost everyday to elk out a living in order for the entire family, most especially the children, to be properly cared for," Hon. (Mrs) Benedicta Ebuehi said.
"So, how is it possible that parental care for children is a fulltime duty? It simply means that whatever we do and wherever we are, the welfare of our children must be uppermost in our minds."
She added that the vulnerability of children even at normal times, not to talk of perilous times as we presently face with coronavirus pandemic, makes it imperative that the wellbeing of our children is given top priority.
"Children are by their nature, impressionable and vulnerable. They therefore, require utmost care and protection from their parents and guardians in order that they do not come into any harm," the Executive Chairman said.
"But most unfortunately, most children are endangered by the very people who are supposed be in the frontline of defence for the children against any danger.
"What do we have today? Parents physically and sexually abusing their own children; religious leaders sexually molesting children who are under their care and teachers sexually blackmailing their students.
Child trafficking is another heineous crime against children that has gained global notoriety, which despite concerted efforts by some individuals and organizations to stamp out the evil, is growing steadily."
Hon. (Mrs) Benedicta Ebuehi warned that except very serious statutes are not only enacted nationally and internationally but also rigorously implemented, the future of children is very bleak.
Hear her: "I am deeply worried about the future of our children if urgents steps are not taken by way of enactment, implementation and execution of stringent laws by nations for the protection of children worldwide.
"To give fillip to my words, I will soon put in place a system of detection, apprehension and prosecution of child abusers of any kind in Etsako East local government area.
"I will spare no effort geared towards protecting our children againt any form of abuse at all times.
"I wish our beloved children a happy celebration of their day at home, instead of an elaborate celebration at public arenas as we normally observe the Children's Day in the years past - no thanks to coronavirus pandemic.
"Please, stay safe."
