Despite deft moves by Acting President Yemi Osinbajo to douse the tension between the North and the South East geopolitical zones of Nigeria, a coalition of Niger Delta agitators has joined the fray with an emphatic “quit our Zone” order on northerners working and or living in the oil-rich-Niger Delta of the country.

The October 1, 2017 deadline quit order to the northerners came after a meeting of the Niger Delta youths held in Port Harcourt, the River State capital on Thursday, June 15, 2017.

There has been tension across the country following an October 1, 2017 deadline given to Igbos resident in the northern part of Nigeria by a coalition of Arewa youths.

In order to calm frayed nerves, Acting President Yemi Osinbajo had met first, with elders and leaders of the northern states, followed by a similar meeting between him and leaders of the South East geopolitical zone.

Political analysts believe the quit order by the Niger Delta agitators is a direct reaction to the non-inclusion of leaders of the Niger Delta in the two meetings held between the Acting President and leaders of the north and those of the South east and not just an act of solidarity with South east.

Aside the quit notice the Niger Delta agitators are also demanding the relocation of the head offices of the Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation, NNPC and all other oil and gas related establishments to the Niger Delta as earlier directed by the Acting president when he visited the region a few months back.

Added to that, the militants want all oil and gas personnel of northern Nigeria extraction to vacate their positions for indigenes of the Niger Delta. They are also demanding that the numerous oil blocks belonging to northern Nigeria elements, including former heads of state and retired generals be forfeited to Niger Deltans.

This new twist to the Arewa-Indigbo saga has, no doubt, come as a dangerous development and an additional burden for the Acting President considering the antecedents of the Niger Delta agitators and the effect their threat and actions could have on the nation’s economy.

As at the time of filling this report no official reaction has come from the presidency.
